Miami: The Magic City
Cruising past the downtown skyline with the sun rays warming my face, wind tossing my hair, and salty sea breeze sticking to my skin... This is sheer bliss.
Yesterday I was lucky enough to (finally) go out on a friend's boat. I can't remember the last time I went out on one; it has to have been nearly a year. Hence, lately I had been craving it. I just wanted to be on a boat. Simple enough, but it's actually quite the mission. Living in Miami, I try to seize the opportunity whenever possible to get out in the ocean- whether it be swimming at the beach a few blocks away from my apartment, venturing out kayaking, paddle boarding (a recent first!), or boating. I am so happy and in my element when I'm on the water. It feels relaxing yet rejuvenating at the same time. While I would've liked my Saturday to feel productive in the form of crossing off items on my endless "to do" list, this was far more fulfilling in every sense. We need to take these days once in a while to just soak in the beauty of the Magic City and all it has to offer. Surrender ourselves to the weekend. Lists and routines can wait, because otherwise we get caught up in them and take where we live for granted. Sure, it's a city built on a cocaine empire and thrives off making money from tourists, but the underlying beauty remains. We all have our vices here, probably the biggest one being overindulgence. I know I'm guilty-- it's easy to do. The city is flooded with gorgeous men, women, celebrities, models, endless flashy designer labels, elite sports cars, high-end restaurants, luxurious hotels, some of the best nightlife in the world, and of course drugs (the latter being something I'm not guilty of overindulging in). But when I take a moment to get back to basics and the simple pleasures that life here brings, it reminds me that I truly do love this beautiful city. Take a deep breath in, open your eyes, and look around. We live in paradise.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game
On Monday I had the exciting opportunity to finally visit the brand new Marlins Park. It was everything a top-notch sporting arena should be-- complete with a retractable roof (that was in use that evening due to heavy thunderstorms), parking garages, countless food and concession stands, a huge float that lights up, sprays water, and has moving marlins every time we score a home run, and a club. Wait, what? Yes, the new Marlins Park has an outpost of a famous hotel/pool party bar on South Beach, The Clevelander. Only in Miami do we have clubs at our sporting venues: there's a LIV at Sunlife Stadium and now The Clevelander at Marlins Park (I even think there was a Bombay Sapphire lounge or something at American Airlines Arena during The Heat season).
Naturally, we had experienced all the other new bells and whistles... Even a home run was hit by our home team so the float was in full display with water and lights galore getting the fans excited, another very "Miami" touch. Upon arriving at the entrance to The Clevelander, we found that our just purchased beer from upstairs could not be brought in: "No Outside Food or Drink" the sign read. Confusing to us, since we are still in the same venue are we not? Whatever, we chugged the beer as the "bouncer" asked my friend and I for our IDs and ten dollar cover a piece. Already I feel like I'm waiting outside a club on Washington Avenue in South Beach and can't help but chuckle in amusement. The mildly entertaining stint soon turned to a shocked outrage when, as we were getting our wristbands put on our left wrists by the door girls, we see a father bring his near seven-year-old son in with him. No ID required. Excuse me??! Did we not just get ID'd and wristbands as a security measure and then a little kid just comes through? If this is a "club" type setting, why are kids allowed? We got over it and made our way into the main area, setting our eyes on the crowd of people at tables by the bar, the small pool with floaties, and the topless girls dancing on a platform above it to the dance club music being played over speakers. All the men are oogling and gawking at the dancers while taking photos and videos on their phones, with their backs to the game (which is difficult to watch anyway because we're at the outfield with a net in front and no jumbo TV screen to see the score or who's at bat... but who's here to watch the game?).
In awe of such a spectacle, we soak it in and head over to the bar to order a new drink, where we are again asked for our IDs by our blonde bartender Barbie in a crop top Marlins halter and tiny booty shorts. After being served our drinks, we make our way over to try and watch some of the game, which admittedly seemed pointless at this juncture. Our attention span was just as bad as anyone else's in "the club/lounge" area so we grabbed a table and took some photos of the topless dancers getting airbrushed artwork on their breasts and stomachs along with the creepy old men. Obviously doing it for the sarcastic purpose of documentation, I'm standing alongside an older man who is doing the same (but for what reason I can't rationalize) who turns to me and says: "One day we'll look back on this and go... 'WOW'." Right. Ha. I walk away and we go to leave back to our seats but again, cannot bring our drinks with us back into the regular part of the stadium. And so ensues another speedy finishing of drinks as the fist-pumping music plays in the background and a Lil Wayne look-alike is standing on a chair cheering the home team on.
The journey back to our seats was intercepted by a sweet tooth craving for ice cream. After which we got lost and gave up trying to navigate the stadium and find our seats. So, with only one inning left, we made an executive decision to head back to our own home bases and call it a night. A night we experienced to the fullest and can look back with a laugh and say, WOW.

Architectural Delight
I had the rare opportunity to attend a private rehearsal for the New World Symphony before the grand opening at the newly designed building by Frank Gehry. Upon entering the new building, right behind the old one on Lincoln Road, I couldn't help but want to explore. It has been under construction for so long and having the ability to see it before opening night was a real treat. Of course, the symphony itself was also remarkable, and it had been some time since I last sat and enjoyed a musical performance like this. I was only able to snap a few photos of the interior on my iPhone, but it truly is an architectural sight.

Artsy Fartsy
Art Basel 2010 was a huge success. I got to enjoy (some) art, (many) parties, and even had to work in between it all. It took a good week to recover from the madness and cram for final exams, but it was worth every minute- I had a blast. Besides brunching with Russell Simmons, Serena Williams, and Kelly Rowland, walking in the biggest bash of the weekend for a YSL show by Vogue (with the aforementioned seated front row along with Gerard Butler, Emilio Estefan, Christian Louboutin, Daisy Fuentes...), I was enjoying musical performances by Metric, Mark Ronson, N.E.R.D., Twin Shadow, Rye Rye, A-Trak & Dave 1. Below are some photos from the week's events and some bizarre art I saw during Scope Art Show. My personal favorite was a pop-up Sanrio shop celebrating its 50th anniversary with a gift shop, art gallery, and tattoo parlor with free tattoos from an LA artist-- took me back to Japan and all the cuteness.

Can't Concentrate
The semester is nearing its end and I'm finishing up class presentations, papers, and studying for final exams while things in Miami are just heating up. I've been so easily distracted lately and just in a "do nothing" mode that makes it so hard to get work done. Tomorrow marks the start of Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 and I can't wait to actually attend and enjoy the galleries/events/concerts! Pictures to follow. But for now, just some things that have been keeping me distracted...

October: Music Month
Here's a look through my iPhone camera at some of the shows I was lucky enough to attend during October- Miami's busiest and best music month yet.

Fairwell Summer...
An ode to Summer, as classes and work are consuming more of my time these days...Summer is... long, endless days,
Spent soaking in the sun's rays.
Conjures up memories from years past,
Always hoping for this time to ever last.
A time for child-like fun,
With ice cream dripping down a cone it does run.
Moonlit beach-side bonfires burn,
While messily eating s'mores & telling stories in turn.
Ocean waves crash at the shore,
Playing in them leaves me wanting more.
Traces of sea salt & sand left in my hair,
I lie in nature's warm embrace without a care.

Back to Black

Today my friend, and famed Miami nightlife photographer, Jipsy (Nefarious Girl) finally got to collaborate. We had been anxiously awaiting this day as we've tried a few times before to do a fun, artistic shoot but it hadn't worked out until now. Today, me, Jipsy, and make-up artist Keegan came together in the heart of Miami Beach to really let the creative juices flow. Thanks to jewelry by Charles Albert, we ran with a vampire-inspired idea and it came out deliciously dark. There was even a black wig that helped me get into the "evil woman" mentality and reminded me how much I miss long hair, making me consider going darker in color too. Here is a sneak peak of one of the looks... more to come and I can't wait!

Art Walk

This past Saturday was Wywood's Art Walk (the second Saturday of every month) in the design district. While it was actually my first time attending art walk, I was no stranger to the event as it's one of Miami's biggest art events in the local Wynwood community. Galleries open for the public to come in browse, sip on wine, and talk creatively with other artists and walkers. While some are truly intent on looking to buy, others can come just to enjoy the art, see what's new, and enjoy the company of friends and other artsy-type folk. I really enjoyed walking around hopping from gallery to gallery, and as the sun went down it made for a lovely summer evening that later progressed into night. I took a couple pictures with my iPhone of the amazing wall murals that provided the backdrop of our walk. It was great to see the more creative and different artistic community that exists in Miami but is often times overshadowed by the glitz and glam. I actually started working with Fabrika, an online music and lifestyle planner as well as branding company that specializes in showcasing this side of Miami. Needless to say, I'm thrilled to be getting involved. Check out the site here: www.fabrikalink.com

Feels good to be back!

I am finally in Miami and settled into my South Beach apartment! I'm happy as a sweaty clam baking in the oven that is Miami in the summer. The moving process was tough and trying, however. First, I had to pack up all my belongings and bid farewell to Brooklyn. Then I was at our home outside of Philly in the Pennsylvania countryside. While it's always quiet and calming there, a lot was going on between clearing out my bedroom for the move, my brother's graduation, graduation party, my quick jaunt back to NYC for a shoot with Samsung, and the movers coming to pack everything up for my mom and I to take to Florida. Then we both arrived in Miami and awaited the arrival of the moving truck, which was another long, hot day of unpacking it all in its respective places (storage unit, my apartment, mom's condo). It was quite the process and we were exhausted after it all. I've been running errands all over (took a hajj to Ikea in Sunrise, and been to Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Best Buy more times than I keep track of) and finally feel like I'm nearing the end, as I feel settled in and the apartment feels like mine.

More than anything, I've been enjoying just being back in this city with my family, friends, car, sunshine, beach, amazing sunsets, and all the other things that I missed about it. I've only been back for 2 weeks now and I'm already so thrilled to be back. I'm absolutely loving it and can't wait for what's to come.

It's April, foolsss!!

Well that was ridiculously quick! April is here and the bunny is upon us tomorrow for Easter Sunday. I need a pause button. But until then, here's just some of what craziness I was up to while in Miami- KRELWear's Rebel Yell Fall/Winter 2010 fashion show at the Eden Roc hotel for Fashion Rocks event. Man it felt great to be back on the runway...

Cue the neon and flashing lights...
This picture was taken at an event I modeled in last week- KrelWear for Artists Wanted at Open House Gallery in NYC. Karelle, the designer, is a friend of mine based in Miami who was in town for some shows and exhibitions of her work. The event was a blast as me and a few other girls got to run around in these crazy neon disco outfits with black lights, strutting our stuff and dancing around. My hair was in a crazy poofy faux hawk that I loved, and I got to wear massive pink and orange lashes, paired with orange lips that glowed under the blacklights. The gallery basically turned into a funky 70s dance party, with guests even getting into it and dancing with us. The way Karelle presents her clothes is so much more fun and interactive than just a 5 minute runway show. Its usually more of a performance art where we get to be characters and take on a different persona. This got me very excited for my upcoming trip to Miami this week, during which Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival will be going on and I'll be mixing time with family and friends who I miss so dearly. I think there will even be a KrelWear event or two, as well as a photoshoot with the amazing NefariousGirl!Cue the electro, dance, and house music, crazy nonstop parties day and night, neon rage wear, and flashing lights...
